hi Daniel, I've looked at the boxing out numbers a little in the past and basically came to the conclusion that they must be charting it/cataloguing it differently than in the past. A year ago I tried watching a game and hand-counted way more box-outs than were officially recorded.

Maybe there are arena effects for box-outs, too? Honestly, though, the change is so drastic that it's clearly a league-wide thing. The dip in offensive rebounds occurs mostly before the dip in box-outs, and the magnitude is so much smaller, too. There's something fishy going on, I just can't figure out what.

Hey Mike, thanks for the comment!

I've tried to track several games "manually" as well, and yeah in some there are definitely some box outs missing, but some of them come quite close to the real number that's displayed on the website.

In general, I do believe that the algorithm must've changed because it's just wild that there is such a big drop off. It could be tied to the arenas, but I didn't initially think about it since tracking data should be collected automatically/programmatically, but who knows..

*shrug* not me! But it's a bummer, I'd love to have reliable box-out numbers. Maybe one day they'll fix it (or at least explain what changed!). It's interesting you had some games come close to the number, that wasn't my experience but I only did one game (which is why I never wrote anything about it).

Yeah I mean something is off for sure, because I only came close if I disregarded box outs during free throw attempts, as there are box outs on almost every (last) free throw, but that just doesn't seem to be counted.
